What South London Sites Actually Have to Deal With

The office stock around Croydon town centre and East Croydon brings its own set of issues, high footfall, mixed-use ground floors, late-running staff using the tram and Southern services after dark. Bromley sits closer to the commuter belt, with business parks around Bromley South and Orpington that look quiet on a Sunday afternoon and need someone there for exactly that reason. Greenwich and Lewisham bring the mixed-tenancy buildings around the peninsula and the larger NHS and healthcare estates around Lewisham and Eltham. Wandsworth and the Battersea side of the river bring the logistics and last-mile warehouse units that have multiplied in the last ten years. Lambeth sits in the middle of all of it.

Where Corporate Security Most Often Falls Short in South London

The reason businesses come to us is rarely a single dramatic incident. Far more often, it is a slow recognition that the cover already in place is not really doing its job. The officer is on site, but staff have stopped escalating things to them. The visitor system exists, but nobody actually checks the pass. Each one does a different job, and the right balance depends on your premises, your staff and the risks you actually face. We figure that out on a site visit, not from a brief and a phone call.

Behind the operational side, we hold the accreditations you would expect from a serious security provider. WHMG is SIA-licensed, registered with the UK Crowd Management Association (UKCMA) and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), and an accredited member of the Living Wage Foundation.

Manned Guarding

Manned guarding looks different across the boroughs. In Croydon, it is often a static officer in a reception or lobby position with a defined patrol route, the issue is the volume of public coming through the doors, not the building geography. In Wandsworth, Battersea and the south-bank warehouse units, it is more often a yard patrol pattern covering gates, perimeter and dock doors. In Bromley, Bexley and Sutton, where business parks empty out by seven in the evening, the risk shifts to night cover. Every officer is SIA-licensed and briefed on the specifics of the site before their first shift. Cover runs daytime, out-of-hours, overnight or any combination, on a contracted, short-term or one-off basis.

Reception and Concierge Security

For a lot of South London offices, the front-of-house role is where security and customer experience meet. Our concierge officers handle visitor management, issue and check passes, and enforce the access policy without making the building feel like a fortress. The job changes by location, a central Croydon professional services office or a serviced building near London Bridge has visitors moving through all day, while the corporate buildings around Bromley and the commuter-belt edges see lower volume but a steadier pattern of contractors and deliveries. In multi-tenancy buildings around central Croydon, Lewisham and the larger Greenwich developments, the concierge also handles overflow questions from tenants without dedicated reception.

Access Control and Visitor Management

Most access control issues are not about the technology. They are about whether the policy on paper is the policy that runs at the door. The dominant building type in South London is the multi-tenancy commercial block, the office towers around East Croydon and West Croydon, the converted buildings across Lewisham and Greenwich, the smaller multi-let buildings off Wandsworth High Street and Lavender Hill. Sub-tenants come and go, contractors get added to the list and never removed, and within twelve months the access list bears little relation to who actually works in the building. Rebuilding that list is usually one of the first things we do on a takeover. The other South London pattern is the logistics gate across the Wandsworth, Battersea and Lambeth distribution units, where driver verification and vehicle movement records need standardising rather than left to the officer on duty.

Incident Management

Aggressive visitors, unauthorised entry, fire evacuations, medical emergencies. Our officers are trained for all of these, and a significant proportion came to us from the armed forces or emergency services, reflected in the Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award we hold. The South London incident profile is shaped by two things. Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance response in the inner boroughs is fast by national standards, and the procedure should be written with that in mind. The second is volume, South London sites see a higher rate of low-level incidents than rural commercial premises. Anti-social behaviour outside the building.
